Satellite ‘79 Music Band: Kevin Botha (1978)- Educator and Business Owner, Robin Finch (1988) – Business Owner, Kevin Leicher (1992) – Business Owner and Alec Leicher (1984) – Attorney.
Satellite ‘79 is an original rock band which consists of Alumni from Marist Brothers Linmeyer. Kevin Botha (1978) bass guitar and harmonica, Alec Leicher (1984) guitars and Robin Finch (1988) vocals and guitar, make up the core of this exciting rock band that is currently working on its second album and is performing around Johannesburg, to packed venues.
The members have been successful in their own right with Kevin being a prolific songwriter and lyricist on a number of South African artists’ hits, his most well-known song being “Special Star” which was co-written with Mango Groove with whom he has written numerous hits. Alec and Kevin joined forces in 2004 in their previous band, Concussion Girl, and have been writing and performing together ever since. Robin started playing at a young age and was still in school when he formed Inheritance with his fellow classmates, Alec joined his band in the late 1988. The band changed its name to Cherry Fox and enjoyed success as a cover band throughout the 1990s on the Johannesburg student scene. Robin left the band to form No Surprise which similarly enjoyed major success on the cover band scene throughout the 90s.
In live gigs, the band is joined by another Alumni member, Kevin Leicher (1992) on drums, who is a well-respected session musician and a SAMA nominated producer. Kevin has made his career out of music and currently heads up the music department at City Varsity in Braamfontein.
